Augas de Galicia awards a 2.3 million euro contract for an integrated technological infrastructure to collect, process and interpret data in real time to improve the management of water resources

  • The joint venture formed by Viaqua Gestión Integral de aguas de Galicia, SA and the Galician Technological Institute Foundation was awarded the service for an amount of 2,310,405.50 euros and an expected execution period of 12 months.
  • This award guarantees the incorporation of state-of-the-art digital technologies for a technological infrastructure for the compilation, processing and interpretation of data that will make it possible to aggregate and exploit all the existing information from different sources in a coherent manner, expanding Augas de Galicia's knowledge of the hydrographic basins and supporting decision-making to increase resilience to climate change.
  • This service is part of Challenge 1 Integrated hydrological information system for advanced management of water resources of the Innovaugas 4.0 project.

The Xunta de Galicia, through the public entity Augas de Galicia, which reports to the Regional Ministry of Infrastructures and Mobility, announced the award of a service contract for the development, implementation and validation of an integrated technological infrastructure for data collection and analysis for a total amount of 2,310,405.50 euros and an expected completion period of 12 months.

This service is part of Challenge 1 Integrated hydrological information system for advanced management of water resources of the Innovaugas 4.0 project, and aims to develop, implement and validate an integrated technological infrastructure for collecting, processing and interpreting data that allows all existing information from different sources to be aggregated and exploited in order to facilitate appropriate decision-making in the short, medium and long term.

Specifically, the proposed technological solution will allow the integrated management of a huge amount of data from very diverse sources such as historical data and predictions of rainfall, temperatures, results of water quality analysis and many other measurements made by the sensors in the Augas de Galicia system.

This innovative solution will guarantee the future integration of new sources of information, as well as the particular configuration of the Galicia-Costa hydrographic demarcation, and the need to record new variables that will allow the impacts produced by climate change on the management of water resources to be known.

Application of artificial intelligence to decision-making

The technology, which does not exist in the current market, will be the best response to store, exchange and manage current and future data, including data exchange with citizens; to analyse, process and treat the available data in an advanced way, applying statistical and artificial intelligence techniques to model future scenarios; and to develop and implement applications that, based on all this available data, and with artificial intelligence, make it possible to respond to specific problems.

Innovaugas 4.0

Innovaugas 4.0 is a project promoted by the Public Business Entity Augas de Galicia, dependent on the Department of Infrastructure and Mobility of the Xunta de Galicia, which seeks to achieve innovative solutions for advanced integrated water management, optimise water resources and provide a long-term response to the demands of the different uses of water, in balance with the natural environment and river ecosystems, respecting the achievement of the environmental objectives established for bodies of water and taking into account the new scenarios determined by climate change.

The Innovaugas 4.0 project has an eligible budget of €7 million and is 80% co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Spanish Multi-regional Operational Programme (POPE) 2014-2020.

Innovaugas 4.0 was selected by the Ministry of Science and Innovation in 2020 in the Line of Promotion of Innovation from the Demand and Innovative Public Procurement, has a European funding of 4,200,000 euros, will also be co-financed by the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN) with 700,000 euros and Augas de Galicia will contribute 2,100,000 euros.
