The Xunta de Galicia, through the public entity Augas de Galicia, which reports to the Regional Ministry of Infrastructure and Mobility, announced the award of a service contract for the development of an advanced system for adaptation to climate change for a total amount of 2,557,093 euros and an expected completion period of 15 months.
This service is part of Challenge 2 Strengthening capacities for preparation and adaptation to climate change of the Innovaugas 4.0 project, advanced management of water resources, which aims to advance in the integration of variables from different sources, design and configuration of predictive models for situations of drought and flooding, to identify vulnerable elements in order to reduce the impacts on society and the environment.
The new system will allow Augas de Galicia to anticipate and adapt the management of water resources to climate change and extreme flood and drought events. Among the needs to be addressed is the need to improve the predictive capacity of prolonged drought events and cyclical shortages, beyond the existing meteorological prediction, extending the predictive framework up to a period of 3 months.
Flood risk and control of aquifers
Adaptation to climate change requires rigorous control of the available bodies of water and the expansion and improvement of Augas de Galicia's flood early warning management capacity, using hydrodynamic models and meteorological forecasts, among others, to estimate the maximum levels and flows expected at certain control points.
This advanced system will also make it possible to predict the possible temporary deterioration of the state of water bodies due to extreme climatic phenomena and to improve the support systems for decision-making.
This will facilitate the adaptation of Augas de Galicia's water resource management system to climate change, enabling more efficient management of this increasingly limited natural resource.
INNOVAUGAS 4.0
Innovaugas 4.0 is a project promoted by the Public Business Entity Augas de Galicia, under the Regional Ministry of Infrastructure and Mobility of the Xunta de Galicia, which seeks to achieve innovative solutions for advanced integrated water management, optimise water resources and provide a long-term response to the demands of the different uses of water, in balance with the natural environment and river ecosystems, while respecting the achievement of environmental objectives established for water bodies and addressing the new scenarios determined by climate change.
The Innovaugas 4.0 project has an eligible budget of €7 million and is 80% co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Spanish Multi-regional Operational Programme (POPE) 2014-2020.
Innovaugas 4.0 was selected by the Ministry of Science and Innovation in 2020 in the Line of Promotion of Innovation from the Demand and Innovative Public Procurement, has a European funding of 4,200,000 euros, will also be co-financed by the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN) with 700,000 euros and Augas de Galicia will contribute 2,100,000 euros.
