Augas de Galicia tenders two innovative systems for 5.7 million euros to improve water resource management and increase resilience to climate change by taking advantage of new technologies

  • These are advanced technological solutions that do not exist in the current market and will represent a decisive advance in the integration, management and analysis of data, as well as in the capacity of Augas de Galicia to predict extreme flood and drought events and thus improve decision-making to reduce impacts and guarantee the protection of society and the environment.
The two services are part of the Innovaugas 4.0. innovation public procurement project, advanced management of Galician water resources, with a budget of 7 million euros.

The Xunta de Galicia, through the public entity Augas de Galicia, which reports to the Regional Ministry of Infrastructure and Mobility, has announced the tendering of two services within the framework of the Innovaugas project, advanced management of water resources, for a total amount of 5.7 million euros.

One of the services is for the development, implementation and validation of an integrated technological infrastructure for collecting, processing and interpreting data to aggregate and exploit all existing information from different sources, for a total of 2,702,076.02 euros and a 12-month execution period.

The other service tendered today is for the development, implementation and validation of an advanced system for adaptation to climate change that integrates the main variables related to flood and drought preparedness and response and water resource management, for a total of 2,990,816.29 euros and a 12-month completion period.

2.7 million for full data integration
The proposed technological solution will enable the knowledge of the river basins to be expanded through the integrated management of a huge amount of data from very diverse sources, such as historical data and rainfall and temperature forecasts, water quality analysis results and many other measurements taken by the sensors in the Augas de Galicia system and by those that are implemented within the framework of this tender. It will also make it possible to analyse, process and treat the available data in an advanced way, applying statistical and artificial intelligence techniques to model future scenarios; and even to develop and implement applications that, based on all this available data, and with artificial intelligence, make it possible to respond to specific problems.

This service is part of Challenge 1 Integrated hydrological information system for advanced management of water resources of the Innovaugas 4.0 project, which aims to advance in the integration of all existing information, reduce field work and incorporate new data and criteria to those already handled in order to facilitate appropriate decision-making in the short, medium and long term.

Improving our adaptation to climate change
The advanced system to increase resilience to extreme events and promote adaptation to climate change will enable Augas de Galicia to anticipate and adapt water resource management to climate change and extreme flood and drought events. Among the needs to be addressed is the need to improve the capacity to predict prolonged drought events and cyclical shortages, beyond the existing meteorological prediction, by extending the predictive framework. The contract will also address the innovative sensorisation of hydrographic basins and the automatic remote monitoring of reservoirs.

This service, tendered for 3 million euros, is part of Challenge 2 Strengthening capacities for preparedness and adaptation to climate change of the Innovaugas 4.0 project, which aims to advance in the integration of variables from different sources, design and configuration of predictive models for situations of drought and flooding, which allow identifying vulnerable elements with the aim of reducing the impacts on society and the environment.

INNOVAUGAS 4.0
It should be remembered that Innovaugas 4.0 is an initiative promoted by Augas de Galicia to seek innovative solutions in advanced integrated water management, optimize water resources and respond to the demands of different uses, taking into account the context of climate change.
Last year, Innovaugas 4.0 received 162 proposals from Spanish and international companies, technology centers and universities.
This innovative project has a budget of 7 million euros and is 80% co-financed by the European ERDF funds.
In addition, Innovaugas 4.0 was selected by the Ministry of Science and Innovation in the Line of Promotion of Innovation from the Demand and Innovative Public Procurement, with a grant of 4.2 million euros from European funds and also the co-financing of the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN), with 700,000 euros, and Augas de Galicia, which will contribute 2.1 million euros.
